Why are only certain electron wave modes allowed in the vicinity of the nucleus? What is the criterion for being allowed?

a.

The wave function must interfere constructively on many oscillations.

b.

The wave function must interfere destructively on many oscillations.

c.

There must be only one wave around the nucleus.

Answer #1

here ,

only certain electron wave modes allowed in the vicinity of the nucleus.it is same as the musical instruments .It is well known that musical instruments operate by the principle of resonance. That is, they are so constructed that only certain sounds can be made by them. Sounds are waves and, as such, can be mathematically described by their size (loudness) and their frequency (pitch). Musical instruments will only make certain frequencies and combinations of frequencies. same goes for electrons in an atom.

hence , the correct choice is

a.   The wave function must interfere constructively on many oscillations.

    5. A wave function for an electron in an atom is called an atomic orbital; this atomic orbital describes a region of space in which there is a high probability of finding the electron. Energy changes within an atom are the result of an electron changing from a wave pattern with one energy to a wave pattern with a different energy (usually accompanied by the absorption or emission of a photon of light). Each electron in an atom is described...

    12. A longitudinal standing wave can be created in a long, thin aluminum rod by stroking the rod with very dry fingers. This is often done as a physics demonstration, creating a high-pitched, very annoying whine. From a wave perspective, the standing wave is equivalent to a sound standing wave in an open-open tube. In particular, both ends of the rod are anti-nodes. What is the fundamental frequency of a 2.50 m -long aluminum rod? The speed of sound in...

Prelab Assignment You are asked by your instructor to draw the Lewis structure of the NHCI molecule. Being of a conservative nature, you proceed as directed in the Procedure section. 1. First, find the number of valence electrons in NHECI. For counting purposes with Lewis structures, the number of valence electrons in an atom of a main group clement is equal to the last digit in the group number of that element in the Periodic Table. N is in Group...
