Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) has been in the news recently as a possible treatment for COVID-19 infections. We do not know much about its efficacy or we are not in a position to discuss about its clinical details. However, from a pure chemistry viewpoint find out the structure of HCQ and Chloroquine and copy paste them below. Also these discussion mentions about the importance of Zinc supplements along with HCQ or chloroquine. We do not know the exact mechanism or its interactions.

  1. Assume HCQ and Zinc are interacting with each other. Based on the concepts learned in general chemistry what do we call these kind of interactions between a metal and a molecular entity?
  2. What all atoms (elements) on the HCQ structure can potentially interact with the metal? Circle them on the diagram.
  3. Will the Zinc metal be in a free metal atomic state or in ionic state during the interaction? What would be the charge of the metal ion?
  4. Based on the electron configuration of the metal Zn predict weather it will be diamagnetic or paramagnetic?
  5. Optional question. Will it be a colored compound?
