The muscles of the face are inserted into the skin or other muscles, rather than into the skeletal structures. This special feature of the facial muscles enables the ease movement of facial skin that express various emotions in our daily life. Muscles of facial expression include,

• Orbicularis oculi (closes and squints eyes)
• Orbicularis oris (closes lips)
• Zygomaticus (Smiling, elevates corners of mouth)
• Buccinator (compression of cheek muscles)
• Levator labii superioris (elevates upper lip)
• Frontalis (frowning, draws scalp anteriorly, wrinkles skin of forehead, raises eyebrows)
• Nasalis (open and close nostrils)
• Platysma (pouting, draws mouth downward)

Muscles of chewing or mastication allow the jaw depression (closing the mouth) and elevation (mastication). They are,

• Temporalis (closing the mouth by elevation of the mandible)
• Masseter (closing the mouth by elevation of the mandible)
• Medial pterygoid (closing the mouth by elevation of the mandible)
• Lateral pterygoid (side to side movement by unilateral action, protrusion of the jaw by the bilateral action).
