Renewable energy technologies are rapidly emerging with potential economic and environmental viability for desalination. There is a need to accelerate the development of novel water production systems from renewable energies. Wind energy and such other RES could provide a viable source of energy to power seawater and brackish water desalination plants. It has been recognized that part of the solution to the world's water shortage lies in water production via desalination techniques, in an environmentally sustainable way. Any decision on the matching of the two technologies, the selection of the WT and the desalination technology, the use of battery storage systems, etc., has to be designed carefully according to the site characteristics and existing experience.
