can imagine injecting magnetic nanoparticles into a tumor, heating them with infra-red radiation
and having the hot nanoparticles kill the tumor. This has advantages in that one
doesn’t have to use toxic chemicals throughout the body. But will it work?
Suppose our nanoparticle has a radius of 3 nm.
a) Use the viscosity of water to estimate the diffusion constant for the nanoparticles in water
b) Estimate how far the nanoparticles will spread out, due to diffusion, in an hour.
c) Is this useful for a typical tumor? Justify your answer.
What if we used charged nanoparticles? Suppose each nanoparticle has one electron charge.
d) Use the value of γ to estimate the terminal velocity in an electric field of 100V/cm.
e) How far will such a particle move in one hour?
f) Is this useful for treating a tumor?
g) How big a field, or how large a charge would you need to make this work?
