Question

Under water, dolphins

 Under water, dolphins emit sounds which have a wavelength of 5.76 mm. In air the same sounds have a wavelength of 1.36 mm. From this information, and the fact that the speed of sound is 343 m/s in air, how large is the speed of sound in water?

Answer #1

as the frequency of sound is constant in both mediums,

speed of sound in water is vw

speed of sound in air, va = 343 m/s

Now, speed of sound in water/wavelength in water = speed of sound in air/wavelength in air

vw/5.76 = 343/1.36

solving for vw

vw = 1452.7 m/s

the speed of sound in water is 1452.7 m/s

    Dolphins emit sound bursts that range in frequency from 1 Hz to 120 kHz. Say that a dolphin is using a sound burst consisting of these frequencies as a form of sonar, like bats. Let the burst last for a time interval of 10 ms, after which it listens for 100 ms. Say that the logarithmic intensity (loudness) of the dolphin's sound is 50 dB as measured at 1 m away. Dolphins can hear sounds that are 2 dB below...
