Question

A cylinder is closed at both ends and has insulating walls. It is divided into two compartments by an insulating piston that is perpendicular to the axis of the cylinder as shown in Figure a. Each compartment contains 1.00 mol of oxygen that behaves as an ideal gas with y 1.40. Initially, the two compartments have equal volumes and their temperatures are T 585 K and T- 185 K. The piston is then allowed to move slowly parallel to the a of the cylinder until it comes to rest at an equilibrium position (Figure b). Find the final temperatures in the two compartments. T1f T2f

[2 ideal gas, thermodynamics process] A cylinder closed at both ends equipped with insulating (adiabatic) walls, and is divided into two parts with a frictionless, insulating, movable piston. The gases on both sides are initially at equilibrium with identical pressure, volume, and temperature (P,:V0:10). The gas is ideal with Cv-3R/2 and Cp/Cv-5/3. By means of a heating coil in the gas on the left hand side, heat is slowly supplied to the gas on the left until the pressure reaches...

An isolated chamber with rigid walls is divided into two equal compartments, one containing steam at 10 bar and 370oC, and the other evacuated. A valve between the compartments is opened to permit steam to pass from one chamber to the other. a)After the pressure (but not the temperatures) in the two chambers have equalized, the valve is closed, isolating the two systems. What are the temperature and pressure in each cylinder?b)If the valve were left open, and equilibrium state...

Two systems have the following equations of state and are contained in a closed cylinder, separated by a fixed, adiabatic and impermeable piston. N1 = 2 and N2 = 1.5 moles. The initial temperatures are T1 = 175 K and T2 = 400 K. The total volume is 0.025 m3. The piston is allowed to move and heat transfer is allowed across the piston. Determine the final temperature of the system (in Kelvin).

Initially the pressure, volume and temperature are the same 1 with Cv independent of temperature and Y-1.5. By means of a heating coil in the gas on the left side, heat is slowly supplied to the gas on the left until the pressure reaches 27Po/8. In terms of nR. Vo and Po:...

(a) Let the radii of the two conductors be only slightly different, so that d << ra. Show that the result derived in Example 24.4 (Section 24.1) for the capacitance of a cylindrical capacitor then reduces to Eq. (24.2), the equation for the capacitance of a parallel-plate capacitor, with A being the surface area of...
