f(x+h) = - 3(x+h) + 2

= - 3x - 3h + 2

{ - 3x - 3h + 2 + 3x - 2 } / h

= -3h/h

= - 3

difference quotient = - 3

difference quotient represents the slope or average rate of change of the function

k(x) = x^2 - x

average rate of change on [ - 2, 1 ]

k(1) = 1^2 - 1 = 0

k(-2) = (-2)^2 - (-2) = 6

average rate of change = - 2

average rate of change is decreasing
