Answer #1

Answer 4: cyclohexaanol oxidation

  • The oxidation method with "Clorox" is cleaner thans using dichromate.
    • Dichromate method (Na2Cr2O7 / H2SO4) produces chromium salts as subproducts. These salts are toxic and the waste products from this method must be classified as hazardous wastes.
    • The Clorox method (NaClO / CH3COOH) does not use heavy metals and the waste are not dangerous. The subproducts are: NaCl and water, in the solution remains also acetid acid.

Answer 5: cyclohexanone extraction

  • The extraction is done in three steps to be sure that all cyclohexanone is extracted
    • At least that the cyclohexanone has a really higher solubility in the solvent (a high distribution coefficient), there is not probably that all cyclohexanone be transfered to the extraction solvent in only one step

Conc.ofcompoundin organic phase Кр Conc.ofcompoundin aqueous phase

  • Then, it is better realize the extraction in three steps

Answer 6: cyclohexanone IR

  • The wide peak between 3300 and 3600 cm-1 is a characteristically signal of O-H aborption for alcohols and water.
  • A peak in that zone indicates two possibilities:
    • The compound is not well dry and has some of water
    • Not all cyclohexanol was converted to cyclohexanone and your product is a mixture of both compounds

Answer 7: cyclohexanone IR

  • The peak at 1064 cm-1 is a characteristically signal of C-O aborption for alcohols.
  • A peak in that zone indicates that not all cyclohexanol was converted to cyclohexanone and your product is a mixture of both compounds

Grignard Reaction with a Ketone: Triphenylmethanol Introduction: The purpose of this lab is to prepare phenylmagnesium bromide, a Grignard reagent, and react it with benzophenone to give triphenylmethanol. Grignard reagents are very reactive and must be synthesized in an environment free of water or any other source of potential proton donor. Once made, the Grignard reagent will do a nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl carbon of the ketone, benzophenone. The result is an alkoxide that is then protonated to give...

Exercise 2 Separation of a Mixture Based on Acid-Base Properties One purpose of this exercise is to learn how to use a separatory funnel to extract a single component away from other compounds in solution. To do so, we will apply the principles of solubility and acid-base behavior you’re seeing in class. One of the compounds is neutral in the acid-base sense. It has no ability to either donate or accept a proton from an aqueous solution, and will remain...

Experiment Write Up Proposal You will write up a synthesis procedure for one reaction that could be potentially run in a face- to-face Chem 2321 lab session. Your proposal will include an introduction and procedure. The procedure will include step-by-step instructions for running the reaction (including reaction monitoring), work-up. (product isolation and purification), and analysis (characterization). You will need to include sample calculations for percent yield and provide sample spectra analysis. You must upload your proposal as a single document...
