Dear Learning Students,
My 7 year old, Holden, does not listen when I ask him to do things. For example, when asked to get ready for bed, get dressed in the morning, or wear a coat he refuses to do what is asked and proceeds to have a tantrum. whenever this happens I end up arguing with him and ultimately I have to force him to do he is told. Please help!
1. My first thought is to use punishment, explain a positive punishment procedure and a negative punishment procedure to help in this situation.

2. I have read that punishment can be problematic. Please explain two problems with using punishment to handle this specific situation.

3. I neeed a solution! Explain how I could solve this problem by using differential rft of low rates (DRL), differential rft of other behaviors (DRO), or differential reinforcement of incompatible behaviors (DRI). Define the procedure and explain how to implement it.

Answer #1

1)positive punishment works when express a strong dislike after done unacceptable behaviour for reducing to happen in future, example is child pick his ear ,verbal scolding

Negative punishment is removed desirable things from individuals life for their undesirable behaviour .example is removing children enjoyable toys. Both are effective to removing undesirable behaviour long time.

2) punishment is not always good .it is good in particular time then chances of repeating same behaviour. It touches emotion problems especially in children. Sometimes children can loss their self controlling mechanism internally.it weakens responses. Loss of control especially from parents lead a quarrel situation in children mind. Punishment in childhood turn behavioural disorder in future. Pain punishment becomes harassment , it increase negative attitudes, fear, stress in child behaviour.

3)The reduce rate of behaviour by imposing minimal interresponses and decrease the responding time. DRL is intervention work when the behaviour is problematic. The reinforcement is neccesary for reducing unwanted behaviour. Determine the rate of behaviour, set behavioural goal, reinforcing achieving the goal.
