A combustion reaction releases 345 KJ of heat and produces gas that does 29 Kcal of work on the lid of the container. What is the change of energy?
29kcal = 121.336 KJ
Since the reaction releases 345 KJ and then does 121.336 KJ of work on the lid of a container, I thought both would be negative, but the correct answer in our practice quiz says they should both be positive. I got -466 KJ and it says it should be +466KJ.
It is asking about change of energy , it should be positive but if it asks about the final internal energy of the system then you have to subtract it from the internal energy.

For the unbalanced combustion reaction shown below, 1 mol of ethanol, C2H5OH, releases 327 kcal (1370 kJ). C2H5OH+O2→CO2+H2O How much heat (in kilocalories) is released from the combustion of 7.38 g of ethanol? How many grams of C2H5OH must be burned to raise the temperature of 360.0 mL of water from 20.0 ∘C to 100.0 ∘C? (The specific heat of water is 1.00 cal/g⋅∘C or 4.184 J/(g⋅∘C). Assume the density of water at 20.0∘C is 1.00 g/mL.

When a gas is burned, it releases 5265.2 cal of heat and does 784.91 cal of work. What is the change in energy, in kJ, for the gas?
Suppose that a combustion reaction that powers a camping stove releases 300kJ of heat, thereby causing water in a pot to absorb 200 kJ of heat. What is the efficiency of heat transfer to the water? (I can see by intuition that the efficiency must be 2/3 or 67%, but I do not know the proper way to solve these problems!) Thanks.
