Consider the following diffraction problem (one dimensional). Au opaque obstruction is placed in the path of an unit amplitude plane wave normally incident on the obstruction as shown in the illustration below. Geometrical or ray optics predicts a shadow region behind the obstruction, however, due to the wave nature of light and thus diffraction off the edge of the obstruction one can observe a bright spot in this shadow region.
