Here' is the concept:

So, markov chain transition matrix basically has probabilities of state change.

So, a state retention probability from 1 to 1 is designated as p11, from 2 to 2 is designated as p22, similarly, from from 1 to 2 is designated as p12.

So, from state 1 in period 2 to state 4 in next period(3) is designated by the probability notation p14.
