Best practices for designing an interface:

Understanding the goals ,skills, preferences and tendencies.A good interface makes it easy for user to tell the computer what they want to do,for the computer to request information from the user, and for the computer to present understandable information.Clear communication between the user and the computer is the working premises of good UI design.Good interfaces are:

  • clear: A clear interface helps prevent user errors, makes important information and contribute to ease of learning and use.
  • Keep the interface simple: The best interface are almost invisible to the user. They avoid unnecessary elements and are clear in the language they use on labels.
  • Consistent: A consistent interface allows the user to apply previously learned knowledge to new tasks.
  • User controlled: The user, not the computer initiates and controls all actions.
  • Direct: Users must see the visible cause-and-effect relationships between the actions they take and objects on the screen. This allows user to feel that they are in charge of computer's activity.
  • Forgiving: USers make mistakes.Users action should be reversible.A good interface facilitates exploration and trial and error learning.
  • Provide feedback: Kee the user informedand provide immediate feedback. And also ensure that the feedback is appropriate to the task.
