Question

Example 3) Suppose you want to study if female Facebook users have more friends on Facebook on average than male Facebook users. To do this you first divide the country into four regions, West Coast, East Coast, Midwest, and South. Then you randomly sample men and women from all four regions and pool them together to make your two samples. Ultimately, you end up sampling 120 female Facebook users and 150 male Facebook users. You find that the female Facebook users have an average of 166 friends with a standard deviation of 58 friends and the male Facebook users have an average of 141 friends with a standard deviation of 66 friends. (a) What type of sampling was used here? (b) Carry out a hypothesis test at .05 to test your claim. (c) Build a 95% confidence interval for the average difference between the number of friends female Facebook users have compared to male Facebook users.

Given X, and x, distributions that are normal or approximately normal with unknown o, and on, the value of t corresponding to X, - X, has a distribution that is approximated by a Student's t distribution. We use the convention that the degrees of freedom is approximately the smaller of n - 1 and n, - 1. However, a more accurate estimate for the appropriate degrees of freedom is given by Satterthwaite's formula: 2 2 xn2 522 +$22) d.f. z...
