Joints are classified based on structural composition of the joint and presence or absence of cavity in th joint into 3 categories:

  1. Cartilagenous
  2. Fibrous
  3. Synovial

Here the intervertebral discs between the vertebrae in the vertebral column are made of fibrocartilage hence they are classified structurally in cartilagenous type of joints.

Functionally the joints are classified into 3 main categories:

  1. Synarthroses: In this the joint is immobile and this type is mainly seen in joints connected by fibrous tissue. Example sutuiral lines in the skull.
  2. Amphiarthroses: This type of joint has limited mobility and mainly seen between the bony surfaces connected by cartilage or ligaments. Intervertebral discs between vertebrae.
  3. Diarthroses: Here there will be synovial capsule and joint space , this type of joint has good mobility. Example is shoulder joint, hip joint.

So intervertebral disc belongs to Amphiarthroses.
