The average of the individual weights of garbages discarded by 17 households in one week have a mean of 35 lb. Assume that the standard deviation of the weights is 14.6 lb. Use α = .05 to test the claim that the population of households has a mean less than 33.22 lb, which is the maximum amount that can be handled by the current waste removal system.

Answer #1

H0: \mu >= 33.22

Ha: \mu < 33.22 (Left tailed)

\alpha = significance level = 0.05

test statistics

Z = \bar{x} - \mu / \sigma / sqrt(n)

= 33.22 - 35 / 14.6 / sqrt(17)

= -0.5027

This is test statistics value.

p value is 0.3076

Since p value > 0.05 level, we do not have sufficient evidence to reject H0.

We conclude at 0.05 level that we fail to support the claim the population of the households has a mean less

than 33.22 lb

    The city of Providence supervisor claims that the mean weight of all garbage discarded by households each week is 31 lb. A random sample of 49 households shows that the sample mean is 30.14 with a standard deviation of 10.06 lb. Is there evidence to reject the supervisor's claim? (use α=0.05 and the rejection region approach).
