A hydrogen atom (Z = 1) is in its 3rd excited state.

It makes a transition to a different state, and either a photon is absorbed or emitted.

a)Which transition(s) are emitting?

b)Which transition(s) are absorbing?

Answer #1

A) From higher excited state to lower excited state.

for ex : n= 3 to n=2

B) From Lower excited state to higher excited state.

for ex : n= 3 to n=4

C) E = (13.6 eV) [1/nf2 - 1/ni2]

E = 0.6611 eV

E = 0.6611*1.60 x 10-19 J/eV = 1.05776 x 10-19 J
