Polymers are large molecules that exist in chains composed of smaller repeating units called monomers. They can come in many forms according to substitution patterns and functional groups. Linear polymers have the monomers repeated in just one line. Cross-linked polymers are branched. Linear polymers have just two ends. Cross-linked have more than two ends. If more than two functional groups (reactive sites) are present in the monomer, the monomers may connect to each other by cross-linking to form a branched three-dimensional molecule instead of a linear molecule. A condensation polymer is formed when the monomers join together and release a small molecule as a by-product. In the following virtual laboratory demos, you will learn how nylon is prepared, including their uses. Check the following links on youtube for the synthesis of Nylon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNh5hK216TM&t=25s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hth 5CWMSOQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ndzkmal k https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INWchxUf6U4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOPTOFGKRNB Assignment: 1. Draw schematic diagram on the synthesis of the polyamide, Nylon just as you would write an entry in your logbook. 2. What are the differences in the chemical structures for different kinds of Nylon? Show the structures and starting materials of Nylon 6, Nylon 6,6 and Nylon 10. 3. What are the practical applications of polyamides? 4. Give commercial examples of nylon.
