Answer #1

1) Given , the specific gravity of slurry = 1.

so, density of the slurry will be , d = 1.31 g/cc

density of barium carbonate = 4.43 g/cc

Volume of slurry taken to make filter cake = 1m cubic

so , amount of barium carbonate in the slurry will be

m = 1.31 g /cc × 10^6 cc

= 1310 kg V

Volume of barium carbonate in that slurry

= 1310×10^3÷4.43 cc

= 295.7 × 10^3 cc

so , volume of water in the slurry

= (1000 - 295.7 ) × 10^3 cc

= 704.3 × 10^3 cc

so , mass of water in the slurry = 704.3 kg

Since , 85% by weight barium carbonate is present in the filter cake

let amount of water in the filter cake obtained from 1 m cubic of slurry is x kg

So , 1310/( 1310+ x) = 0.85

1310 + x = 1310/0.85

x = 1541 - 1310 = 231 kg

so amount of water removed from slurry to form filter cake = 704.3 - 231 = 473.3kg

And , amount of filter cake obtained from 1 m cubic of slurry is 1541 kg
