Question

The electrochemical cell represented in consists of two electrodes. One is solid NiO/Ni mixture, other is gaseous O2 electrode. The porous platinum coating also acts as a catalyst. The electrolyte is a ZrO2/Y2O3 solid solution that conducts oxygen ions betweanying diagram consists of two electrodes. Zro2 Y2en the oxygen side and the NiO/Ni side. The standard free energy of reaction for Ni+1/2 O2--> NiO is ?G=-244,550+98.5 T (J) (where T is in Kelvin)

What is the open circuit voltage at 1000 K when the oxygen pressure on the oxygen electrode side is 10-10atm?

Answer #1

ΔG=-244,550+98.5x 1000

= -146050 J

We know that,

delta G = -nFE

-146050 J = - 2 x 96485 x E

E = 0.756 V
