Answer #1

polyatomic ion as a molecule that has been ionized by gaining or losing electrons. In a polyatomic ion, the group of covalently bonded atoms carries a net charge because the total number of electrons in the molecule is not equal to the total number of protons in the molecule. When drawing Lewis dot structures, the overall charge on a polyatomic ion is equal to the sum of the formal charges on each atom in the ion.

Bond energies are quite accurately additive in saturated polyatomic ions notwithstanding the long-range interactions and the marked dependence on the complexity of the ion of the extent of the dispersal of the free charge. Additivity is a less good approximation for unsaturated polyatomic ions.

Polyatomic ions each carry a specific charge, which is determined by their numbers of valence electrons

Name- Exercise 1. A conservation biologist is in charge of the recovery of an endangered species called the Giant Kangaroo Rat (GKR), depicted below. The GKR lives in arid grasslands in California and is endangered because most of its range has been developed into agriculture One of the issues threatening the remaining populations is that the kangaroo rats are becoming infected with ear mites that interfere with their hearing ability, which affects mating and survival. The biologist goes to three...
