Our chief of police on campus, is in pursuit of a speeding car driven by Diedra who is late for her swimming competition on campus. Assume that Diedra drives at 36 m/s and police car is going at 29.5 m/s. What is then the frequency heard by Diedra if the frequency pf plices siren is 424 Hx? In that day, the airs humidity and temperature make the speed of sound in air to be 342 m/s.

Answer #1

Using doppler's effect:

frequency received by you will be, when Source (Police car) and observer (Diedra) both are moving in same direction:

f1 = f0*(V - Vo)/(V - Vs)

f0 = 424 Hz

f1 = frequency observed = ? Hz

V = Speed of Sound = 342 m/sec

Vo = speed of Observer = 36 m/sec

Vs = speed of Source = 29.5 m/s

So,

f1 = 424(344 - 36)/(344 - 29.5)

f1 = 415.24 Hz = frequency heard by Diedra

Let me know if you've any query.

What is the change between the emitted frequency and the frequency of the reflected signal detected by the radar unit? (Enter a negative value if the emitted frequency is greater than the reflected frequency.)
