Explain why could or couldn't agree with each of the statements a) Cov(y,x) and Cor(y,x) can take value between -infinity and +infinity

b)If Cov(y,x)=0 or Cor(y,x)=0 one can conclude that there is no relationship between Y and X

c)the least square line fitted to the points in the scatter plot of y versus \tilde{y} has a zero intercept and a unit slope

Answer #1

a) first statement is wrong because we know that the range of the correlation coefficient is - 1 to 1.

b) the 2nd statement is also wrong because it does not mean there is no relationship between Y and X but it means that there is no linear relationship between Y and X.

c) 3rd statement is also wrong in general it is not necessary to have a unit slope and zero intercept it is only possible if both data is same.

thanks :)

If the corelation between x and y is r = 0.82, which one of the following statements is true? The y-intercept of the least-square regression line is the point (0, 0.82). Low values of x are associated with high values of y. High values of x are associated with high values of y. The slope of the least-square regression line is m = b1 = 0.82.
