The ultimate settlement of the clay layer can be calculated by
using the formula,
where,
Ho = Thickness of soil stratum or layer
Cc - Compression index
eo - Initial void ratio
Final stress = Initial stress + Incremental stress
Initial stress = Bulk unit weight of the soil * Depth of soil
layer
Incremental stress is calculated by Bousinessq's equation,
where,
r - Radial distance
Z - Depth of the layer from the bottom surface of the
footing
The ultimate settlement is calculated from the centre of the
footing to the distance of 6m from the centre.
