Answer #1

1) Numerator df = 8 - 1 = 7

Denominator df = 6 - 1 = 5

For 7 numerator df, 5 denominator df and 5% significance level:

Critical value = 4.88

2) Standard deviation = \sqrt{Variance} = \sqrt{20} = 4.47

A person can take either of two routes to work, through Matteson or Richton Park. Both take on average 35 minutes, and travel times are Normally distributed. But are the variances of the travel times different? A random sample with n = 8 from Matteson route and n = 6 from Richton Park route showed a variance of 40 (units: square minutes) and 30 respectively. To test whether the variances are different, the following test of hypothesis should be done:...

There are three routes I can take to get from school to home. Every day when I leave, I randomly select which route I will take (i.e. I am equally likely to take each of the three routes). Route 1 takes 3 minutes, Route 2 takes 5 minutes, and Route 3 takes 7 minutes. (a) What is the expected time it will take me to get home? (b) What is the variance of the time it will take me to...

Dorothy Stanyard has three major routes to take to work. She can take Tennessee Street the entire way, she can take several back streets to work, or she can use the expressway. The traffic patterns are, however, very complex. Under good conditions, Tennessee Street is the fastest route. When Tennessee is congested, one of the other routes is preferable. Over the past two months, Dorothy has tried each of route several times under different traffic conditions. This information is summarized...

A man who moves to a new city sees that there are two routes he could take to work. A neighbor who has lived there a long time tells him Route A will average 5 minutes faster than Route B. The man decides to experiment. Each day he flips a coin to determine which way to go, driving each route 15 days. He finds that Route A takes an average of 44 minutes, with standard deviation 3 minutes, and Route...

Two processes for manufacturing large roller bearings are under study. In both cases, the diameters (in centimeters) are being examined. A random sample of 26 roller bearings from the old manufacturing process showed the sample variance of diameters to be s2 = 0.231. Another random sample of 28 roller bearings from the new manufacturing process showed the sample variance of their diameters to be s2 = 0.146. Use a 5% level of significance to test the claim that there is...
