People living at high altitudes have higher hemoglobin content in their red blood cells than those living near sea level. Explain this observation using the tools of physical biochemistry and thermodynamics.

Atmospheric pressure is low in high altitude. So human living in high altitudes lives in low pressure. Here the level of oxygen also low. This condition leads to the release of erythropoietin (EPO). This molecule stimulates the production of RBCs. Because of low oxygen pressure, body demand bonemarrow to through more RBCs into the circulation. This increased haemoglobin will increase the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood and the breathing capacity of the lungs. So the peoples living in high altitude have higher haemoglobin content than the peoples living in near sea level.
