porter's five forces analysis news corporation
News Corporation or News Corp. is a publicly traded transnational mass media company. The entities under its fold include News Corp Australia, News UK, Dow Jones etc.
Porter’s five forces analysis of the company:
1. Threat of new entrants – The level of this threat his high for News Corporation as new entrants bring with themselves innovation and introduce new ways of doing things. Pressure builds on News Corporation with regards to pricing pressure, costing, and providing effective value proposition to their customers.
2. Bargaining power of suppliers – The bargaining power of suppliers is moderate given the fact that News Corporation buys their raw materials from various different vendors and suppliers. This does not give a particular supplier to be in a dominant position and dictate price terms to News Corporation.
3. Bargaining power of buyers – The bargaining power if buyers for News Corporation are fairly high as it has a set of customer base that is small yet powerful. This gives these customers higher bargaining power. News Corporation is seeking to reduce this by expanding their customer base, by innovating and providing new products, and by adding more value to their offerings.
4. Threat of substitute products – As News Corporation is service oriented and not product oriented the threat of substitute products for it is not very high. The company is still looking to reduce this threat by determining the core need of its customers and trying to satisfy that need most effectively.
5. Rivalry among existing competitors – The level of rivalry is very high in the industry in which News Corporation operates in. The company is looking to reduce this by offering differentiated products to its customers, and by building scale so as to be in a better position to ward off competition.
