Male participants came into the lab to complete a study. To get to the study, the participant had to walk down a narrow hallway. In the hallway, the participant had to pass a filing cabinet, where a male confederate (a person secretly helping the researcher) was looking for a file and blocking the hallway. As the participant tried to edge past the confederate, the confederate responded angrily and insulted the participant.
As the participant continued down the hall they ran into a second confederate who introduced himself, shook the participant’s hand, and then secretly recorded the firmness of the handshake.
Finally, the participant completed a short survey in which he indicated if he was from the northern or southern part of the United States of America.
The results showed that those raised in the south became more upset and had a firmer handshake after being insulted by the confederate than the participants raised in the north. The researchers use these results (along with the results from many other studies) to support the theory that the culture in the southern US promotes more male aggression than the culture in the northern US.
