This test is based on the reduction of chromium(IV), which is orange, to chromium(III), which is green, when an alcohol is oxidized by the reagent. A change in color of the reagent from orange to green represents a positive test. Primary alcohols are oxidized by the reagent to carboxylic acids; secondary alcohols are oxidized to ketones. Tertiary alcohols are not oxidized at all by the reagent. Hence, this reaction can be used to distinguish tertiary alcohols form primary and secondary alcohols. Unlike some other tests for alcohols, this test can be used with all alcohols, regardless of molecular weight and solubility. Aldehydes are also result in a positive chromic acid test.

Procedure: Dissolve 3-4 drops of a liquid alcohol in 1 mL of acetone. Add 2 drops of chromic acid reagent and note the result that occurs. A positive test for a primary or secondary alcohol is the appearance of a blue-green color. Tertiary alcohols do not produce the test result, and the solution remains orange. Record your observations. Perform this test on 1-propanol, 2-butanol, phenol, propanal, and your unknown.
