Shear strength
The shear strength of a slope represents its resistance to down slope failure as an earth-flow or mud-flow.
Shear strength includes frictional force or frictional resistance and cohesion, i.e., ability of the particles to hold together. This shear strength is the main resisting force for downslope movements. And the gravitational force is the main driving force to downslope movement of materials.
When gravitational force is greater than the holding force, then objects will move downwards.
That's all.
