Answer #1

Given,

Initial velocity of rock, u=o since drop

Time,t=4 sec

Final velocity of rock, v =?

Formula: v= u+at

Where, a=-9.8 m/s^{2}

Now v=0+(-9.8)4=-39.2 m/s

Speed of rock 4 seconds later is, v=-39.2 m/s

Here negative sign for velocity represents it is moving towards negative Y- axis or downward from point of drop.

Negative sign for acceleration is also the same meaning.
