Answer #1

IUPAC rules for naming complex compounds:

1. For ionic complexes, always name the cation first.

2. In complex ion, name the ligands first and then the central atom.

3. If more than one ligand present, use di, tri, tetra,..... suffix.

4. For polydentate ligands, use bis, tris, tetrakis... as suffix.

5. If different ligands are present, follow alphabetical order.

6. For neutral and cationic complex ions, central metal name is written as it is.

7. For anionic complexes, the central metal atom name ends with -ate.

8. Oxidation number of central atom must be shown in Roman numbers after the metal name.

The IUPAC names for the given complex compounds are as follows:

(a) K, [PdC1, ]- Potassium tetrachloropalladate(II) . - Tetraamminediaquacobalt(II) cation Tetraammineethylenediamminemangane

SYNTHESIS OF TRANSITION METAL COORDINATION COM 3. Ethylenediamine ("en" in short-hand notation) has two amine groups, one at each end of a two-carbon chain, NH,CH,CH,NH. Each nitrogen in NH,CH,CH_NH, has a lone pair that coordinates to the metal. Thus, one NH CH CH NH, ligand, takes up two coordina- tion sites. a) Draw and label the structures of the cis and trans isomers of Co(en),C1,CI. b) What is the coordination number for (Coſen),C1,CI? c) Determine the oxidation state of the...
