Answer #1

Sodium hypochlorite is used as a source for the bromination in presence of sodium bromide. previously bromine is used for the bromination reactions but that have many disadvantages like toxicity and cost of the material.

Sodium hypochlorite is the cheapest source for the bromination of aromatic compounds. It makes aromatic ring more active toward bromination. It reacts with sodium bromide to release molecular bromine which which is the electrophile for the aromatic ring

It is removed from the reaction mixture by treating the organic layer with sodium thiosulfate 5% solution. sodium thiosulfate is used as the quenching agent for the sodium hypochlorite for household bleach
