In 3 f, 3 is principal quantum number.

Azimuthal quantum numbers and corresponding orbitals are given below.

0 -- s

1 -- p

2 -- d

3 -- f

Azimuthal quantum number will always be less than principal quantum number.

So azimuthal and principal quantum number cannot be equal.

In 3 f , they are equal. So it is not acceptable.

(4f, 5f etc are acceptable, not 3f,2f or 1f ::: for clarification)
