Answer #1

1.Ans : a) Infra-red(IR) radiation can not have enough energy to induce electronic transition like UV spectra. But it can induce vibrational as well as rotational transition. Absorption of IR is restricted to the compounds with small energy differences in the possible vibrational and rotational states.

Hence, the statement is false.

b) For a molecule to be infra-red active, the vibration or rotation within a molecule must cause a net change in the molecule.

Homonuclear diatomic molecules(such as H2,N2,O2) does not possess changing dipole moment when they undergo vibrational and rotational motions, as a result, they can not absorb IR spectra and are IR inactive.

Hence, the statement is true.
