Secondary structure elements describe local regions of polypeptide backbone conformation and include the alpha helix and beta sheet. A few of these contiguous secondary structure elements can combine in specific three-dimensional arrangements to form supersecondary structures or structural motifs.

There are three common secondary structures in proteins, namely alpha helices, beta sheets, and turns. That which cannot be classified as one of the standard three classes is usually grouped into a category called "other" or "random coil".

There are no tertiary structures.There are supersecondary structures which are intermediate between secondary and tertiary structures. These structures result from packing specific adjacent secondary structure motifs, such as helix-turn-helix, β-barrel, leucine zipper, and zinc zipper.
