(a) C6H5SO2 does not react with water.

(b) A step-scan fourier transform spectrometer together with a multipass absorption cell can record the IR Spectra of reaction intermediates formed in this reaction. Two bands with origins at 1087.7 and 1278.2 cm-1 are assigned to SO2 symmetric and anti symmetric stretching modes. The attached Infrared spectrum of the reaction intermediates is thus an evidence of the decomposed by products.
