Why do we write the unit vectors from the charges to the point of interest? The negative charge particles will have the field coming towards it, so I do not understand the directions. For instance, shouldn't the negative charge on the left of the x-axis be (a2y2) ?

Don't get confused with the field and unit vector directions. They didn't ask for the directions of the field. They asked about the unit vectors from charge to point.

the unit vector is always written as =(coordinate so fpointofinterest) - (coordinateso f charge) magnitude

The field direction will be taken care of by the -ve sign put for the negative charge when using the charge value in the equation of the field.
