Scenario: You are in charge of allocating a $10,000 bonus to a team that has recently met an important deadline. The team was in charge of designing a web-based product for a client. The project lasted a year. There were five people in the team. Instructions: Your job is to determine each person’s share from the bonus. Team Members: • Devin: Project manager. Devin was instrumental in securing the client, coordinating everyone’s effort, and managing relationships with the client. He put in a lot of extra hours for this project. His salary is $80,000, and he is independently wealthy, drives an expensive car and does not have any debt. He has been with the company 5 years and worked for the project since the beginning • Alice: Technical lead. Alice oversaw the technical aspects of the project. She resolved many important technical issues. While some worked extra hours, she refused to stay at the office outside regular hours. She was productive during regular work hours and accessible via email in the evenings. Her salary is $50,000. Alice is a single mother and has lots of debt. She has been with the company 4 years and has worked for the project for 8 months. • Erin: Graphic Designer. Erin was in charge of the creative aspects of the project. She experimented with many looks and slowed down the team. She made many mistakes during the project, but the look and feel of the project appealed to the client leading to repeat business. Her salary is $30,000. She is single, lives to party, and has been with the company for 2 years. She worked for this project since the beginning. • Brice: Tester. Brice was in charge of finding the bugs in the project and ensuring it worked. He found many bugs but was not very aggressive in his testing. He misunderstood many things, and many of the bugs found were not really bugs but his misuse of the system. He had a negative attitude toward the project. He acted very pessimistically regarding the likelihood of success, and demoralized the team. His salary is $40,000, and he has accumulated large credit card debt. He has been with the company for 3 years and worked for the project for the last 6 months. • Carrie: Web developer. Carrie was in charge of writing the code. She was primarily responsible for meeting the project deadline because she put in a lot of extra work hours. Her salary is $50,000. Her mother has ongoing health issues, and Carrie needs money to help her. She has been with the company for the past year and has been in this project for 6 months. Devin was the leader who was the driving force of the project. He not only put extra hours but worked hard from the beginning until the end of the project. As he is already wealthy, I believe it is not the monetary benefits that will motivate him but the acknowledgment of his hard work. therefore, out of $12000, he would be getting $2500 for his efforts and the company will provide him other benefits such as flexibility in his working hours, skills and development programs and finally a chance of getting promoted. The promotion will be a bigger motivator than anything else for him, I believe.Alice was very productive and worked hard for the project. Although she refused to work extra hours it was understandable as she is a single mother. moreover, she was very productive in her working hours which made up for the loss of extra hours work. therefore, her efforts should be rewarded with $3000 along with benefits like flexibility in working hours, paid vacations and a chance to participate in skills and development program to enhance her abilities. Although Erin slowed down the project to a considerable level, she did ultimately provide a design that appealed to the clients. Therefore, she should be rewarded with a $1700 for her hard work along with benefits like skills and development program which would help her in managing her future projects and increasing her speed for job completion. This would not only benefit her personally but also help the company in the long run. Brice was not as efficient a team member as he should have been. He failed to complete his job tasks effectively and this resulted in many issues regarding the project. Also, he was pessimistic about the whole project and demotivated the staff. Therefore, for his efforts, he should be rewarded $1300 and a training session to improve his skills and temperament in his job. Carrie was responsible for the project being completed under the deadline. While every other member contributed, it would have been Carrie who would have been blamed for her inefficiency had the project not been completed on time. she worked extra work hours in spite of having an ailing mother she needed to take care of. therefore, for her efforts, Carrie should be rewarded with $3500 along with benefits like paid vacations and flexibility in working hours for her.
