The reaction scheme is as follows.

Note that -OH is a ortho/para directing group. When CO2 is added, as the ortho position is blocked by -CH3, CO2 adds to the para position. When NaOH, CO2, H+ is added to 2,6 xylenol, Co2 adds to form a carboxylic acid substituent in the benzene ring. Then when ethanoic anhydride is added to compound A, it reacts with the alcohol group to form an ester.
