Question

A mechanical experiment is done on two bone samples, one with a circular section and the second one a rib bone with rectangular section. The dimensions of bone samples are shown in the figure below. In this experiment, a 3-point bending was done by putting the specimens on two rigid supports, with the center of each support 2.5mm away from the free end of specimen at each side. A quasi-static load with the maximum of 1000N was applied at the center of each specimen:

  1. What is the maximum deflection under the load measured for each specimen ?
  2. Which specimen will experience failure first under the load ?
  3. If the maximum allowable deflection is 0.3mm, what is the load required to take each specimen to that deformation?
