Q- A study by the Swedish Road Administration resulted that 59 % of all severe and fatal motorcycle accidents could be avoided by the use of anti-lock braking (ABS) systems. As a consequence, the European Union (EU) passed legislation that made ABS systems compulsary on all new motorcycles sold in the EU from 2014 onwards. ABS systems ensure that the wheels do not ‘lock up’ (i.e. stop rotating), during braking, while the motorcycle is still in motion. Briefly explain why this is important from a motorcycle safety and maintenance point of view.
