How have federal and state regulations mirrored societal focus on substance use?
For long, the society and the government alike treated drug use as abnormal and illegal. This would mean that people were not in favor of using drugs which was strengthened by their religious belief and social norms. However, as individual rights increased and the society started becoming more diverse, people started overcoming the social norms and ventured into achieving new rights that would satisfy their individual rights. Thus, there were many movements such as, women, African American, sexual rights etc. all came into existence and the government had no other way but to approve their requests. Legalizing recreational drugs was also part of this movements which some of the states in the country made it into law while others are considering to legalize them. Although the government has already introduced war on drugs, it is also trying to make it legal as per the wishes of maximum number of people in order to overcome the hardships of the government in fighting the drugs.
