Germany’s “church tax” makes up 8-9% of the country’s income tax. The tax is voluntary (does one want to be a member?) and proceeds are given to the church of one’s choice. The Catholic Church has responded by restricting access to services and rites if they’re not chosen by a taxpayer. Comment in light of “public goods”.

Answer #1

Answer: the church is no more a public good.

A public good must have limitless availability, means one’s use of such good doesn’t reduce the use of others, and free accessibility for all, means the use of it is not restricted for non-paying customers.

Basically a church falls into this category. This is a public good, since anyone can use the church for paying (free accessibility) and one’s use doesn’t create limit for others’ use (limitless availability)

Since the church is restricting access now to the non-paying users, there should not be any free accessibility although there is limitless availability. Since one feature is gone, it is no more a public good.
