Explain how you can tell from the information given in a question whether or not you need to calculate the reaction quotient, Q, for a particular problem.

Reaction quotient, Q, needs to be calculated in the following scenarios:

  • If concentrations of reactants and products are given at conditions when the system is not in equilibrium.
  • To find out in which direction the reaction proceeds to attain the equilibrium conditions.
  • To find out whether a salt dissolves in water or not (provided that solubility product is known).

If the concentrations of reactants and products are provided at equilibrium condition, you most likely need not calculate the reaction quotient.
