The following table gives the number of pints of type A blood used at Damascus Hospital in the past 6 weeks:

The following table gives the number of pints of type A blood used at Damascus Hospital in the past 6 weeks:

a) The forecasted demand for the week of October 12 using a 3-week moving average =_________ pints (round your response to two decimal places).

b) Using a 3-week weighted moving average, with weights of 0.15, 0.25, and 0.60 using 0.60 for the most recent week, the forecasted demand for the week of October 12 =______ pints (round your response to two decimal places and remember to use the weights in appropriate order—the largest weight applies to most recent period and smallest weight applies to oldest period.)

c) If the forecasted demand for the week of August 31 is 360 and α=0.25, using exponential smoothing, develop the forecast for each of the weeks with the known demand and the forecast for the week of October 12 (round your responses to two decimal places).

The following table gives the number of pints of type A blood used at Damascus Hospital in the past 6 weeks: Week Of August 3October 5 3/4 a) The forecasted demand for the week of October 12 using a 3-week moving average = pints (round your response

Answer #1

SIMPLE MOVING AVERAGE

FORECAST = SIGMA(PREVIOUS N DEMANDS) / N

WHERE N = 3

FORECAST 4 = (360 + 372 + 410) / 3 = 380.67

FORECAST 5 = (372 + 410 + 381) / 3 = 387.67

FORECAST 6 = (410 + 381 + 371) / 3 = 387.33

FORECAST 7 = (381 + 371 + 374) / 3 = 375.33

WEIGHTED MOVING AVERAGE

FORECAST = SIGMA(WEIGHT FOR PERIOD * DEMAND PER PERIOD) / SUM OF THE WEIGHTS

WHERE LARGEST WEIGHTS ARE MULTIPLIED BY THE MOST RECENT DEMANDS

FORECAST 4 = ((410 * 0.6) + (372 * 0.25) + (360 * 0.15)) / 1 = 393

FORECAST 5 = ((381 * 0.6) + (410 * 0.25) + (372 * 0.15)) / 1 = 386.9

FORECAST 6 = ((371 * 0.6) + (381 * 0.25) + (410 * 0.15)) / 1 = 379.35

FORECAST 7 = ((374 * 0.6) + (371 * 0.25) + (381 * 0.15)) / 1 = 374.3

FORECAST(T + 1) = FORECAST + (ALPHA * (ACTUAL DEMAND - FORECAST))

FORECAST 2 = 360 + (0.25 * (360 - 360) = 360

FORECAST 3 = 360 + (0.25 * (372 - 360) = 363

FORECAST 4 = 363 + (0.25 * (410 - 363) = 374.75

FORECAST 5 = 374.75 + (0.25 * (381 - 374.75) = 376.31

FORECAST 6 = 376.31 + (0.25 * (371 - 376.31) = 374.98

FORECAST 7 = 374.98 + (0.25 * (374 - 374.98) = 374.74
