Choose true or false for each of the statements regarding gas exchange across the respiratory membranes.

1. The thinner the membranes, the more readily gas exchange occurs.   True  False
2. CO2 has a diffusion coefficient of 20, and oxygen has a diffusion coefficient of 1; therefore CO2 does not diffuse as readily through the
membranes as oxygen.  True  False
3. A larger surface area allows for more gas exchange.  True  False
4. Gas exchange occurs across membranes from areas of low concentration to high concentration True or False

Answer #1

1. GIVEN statement is TRUE.

Thinner membrane allows gas exchange more readily than thicker membrane.

Thickening of respiratory membrane is inversely proportional to gas exchange.

More thickness of membrane lesser will be the gas exchange.

2.Given statement is FALSE.

higher diffusion coefficient leads to higher rates of diffusion.

so as carbon dioxide has higher diffusion coefficient than oxygen so it diffuses readily than oxygen at respiratory membrane which has lower diffusion coefficient.

3.Given statement is TRUE.

large surface area allows more gas exchange. Decrease in surface areas will effect diffusion of respiratory gases.

4.Given statement is FALSE.

Gas exchange takes place across membrane from areas of higher concentration to areas of lower concentration.

For example, oxygen diffuses from alveoli (region of high concentration) to blood vessels like arteries ( region of lower concentration). Carbon dioxide from veins ( region of high concentration) to alveoli ( region of lower concentration).

Name 13. During gas exchange in the lungs, several factors affect the rate of gas diffusion across alveolar (the alveoli are tiny air sacs in the lungs) and tissue membranes. One of the factors is the difference in partial pressures of the gases across the membranes. The gases will diffuse from an area of high partial pressure to an area of low partial pressure, Look at the illustration below and note which blood vessels carry blood away from the lungs...

Which of the following statements is correct about the process of breathing in the MAMMALIAN Respiratory System? Strong contraction of the Diaphragm exerts a positive force on the Trachea and Bronchioles, which pushes air into the lungs through positive pressure. Breathing with Lungs must be more efficient than breathing with Gills, since atmospheric air has less oxygen available, when compared to the amount of oxygen dissolved in water. During Inhalation, contraction of the Rib Muscles and Diaphragm increases the volume...

    1. Which of the following statements is FALSE? Homeotherms can sustain a high level of physical activity for long periods. Homeotherms require a very low amount of glucose for daily activities. Homeotherms can generate energy rapidly when the situation demands. Homeothermy allows organisms to function at a higher level in cold environments. Homeotherms have relatively higher metabolic rates than similar-sized poikilotherms. 2.
