Answer #1

In part (a),

               Total frequency = 12+18+10+13+20+8+2+1= 84

AVERAGE= {Sum of (midpoint\timesfrequency) } \div total frequency

               = (17\times12 + 20\times18 + 23\times10 + 26\times13 + 29\times20 + 32\times8 + 35\times2 + 38\times1)\div84

               = 2076\div84 = 24.7143 ......................          (ANSWER)

In part (c),

VARIANCE ={Sum of (frequency\times(midpoint-average)^2)}\div total frequency

                 ={12\times(17-24.7143)^2 + 18\times(20-24.7143)^2 + 10\times(23-24.7143)^2 + 13\times(26-24.7143)^2 + 20\times(29-24.7143)^2 +

                     8\times(32-24.7143)^2 + 2\times(35-24.7143)^2 + 1\times(38-24.7143)^2}\div84

                = 2345.1429 \div 84= 27.9184.....................          (ANSWER)

In part (b),

STANDARD DEVIATION = Square root of variance

                                     = 5.2838 ..............................        (ANSWER)

In part (d),

The percentage of cars going through signals during 22nd and 29th time setting is

percentage during 22nd time = (frequency\divtotal frequency) \times 100

                                              = (10\div84) \times 100 = 11.9 ............................         (ANSWER)

percentage during 29th time = (frequency\divtotal frequency) \times 100

                                             = (20\div84) \times 100 = 23.8 ................................       (ANSWER)
