Understanding of myofilaments:

The given structures in myofilaments are labelled and is attached below:

Myosin tail Troponin ATP Actin Thin filament Tropomyosin Thin ATP filament Tropomyosin Myosin head Actin-binding site ADP Act

  • The sarcomere is composed of myofilaments, which are the contractile units of striated skeletal and cardiac muscles. These myofilaments occupies 70% of the total heart tissue.
  • Myofilaments contain thick and thin filaments.
  • It contains the chains of actin and myosin for packing muscle fiber. It contains globular head and a long tail.
  • The thin filament is composed of actin, troponin and tropomyosin. The thick filament is composed of myosin.
  • The globular head contains sites for ATP and actin binding and the long tail helps in polymerization into myosin filaments. ATP is hydrolyzed to ADP by the enzymatic activity.
  • The interaction between actin and myosin causes muscular contractions.
